“He (Architect Saco Rienk DeBoer) divided the city into industrial, commercial, and residential zones to minimize traffic congestion and arranged the commercial blocks around open squares to “create store groups of unusual beauty” – clothing shops in one square to “creat store groups of unusual beauty” – clothing shops in on square, groceries in another , and s on.” Page 254
In Real Life
Michael Hiltzik tells us in Colossus – there was a grand plan for Boulder City. It was the plan architect Saco Deboer came up with for the town – but not all of it became a reality. However, the city shopping district with stores and squares and plazas made the cut. It’s interesting to think the design he created all those years ago is still what makes downtown Boulder City a very nice place to walk and shop.
