In Real Life:

It was like an urban legend or something – everyone kept saying Tennessee Williams had a link to the Wednesday Club – the first women’s literary group in St. Louis – but no one was saying what it was. Then I found this link and it’s all right there. It turns out that in 1936 to 1937, the years Williams attended Washington University, three of his plays were produced at the Wednesday Club auditorium on Westminister Place. And back in 2007, Tom Mitchell – the head of the Theater Department at University of Illinois who writes for the Tennessee Williams Annual Review – brought the play, Candles in the Sun, back to the Wednesday Club – 70 years after its debut. I went to check it out – and found the building is no longer the Wednesday Club – it’s called the Learning Center. It’s good-looking – it’s supposed to be a fine example of Prairie Style architecture. I could see it all – a young Tennessee, inspired, dashing up and down the steps with the characters in his plays dancing around in his head.
