In Doctor Glas:

“A warm late summer sun gilded the Dramatic Theatre’s old yellow façade between the linden trees. On the pavement the manager of the theatre was standing talking to the producer. The distance reduced them to miniatures, the play of their outlines only to be grasped and interpreted by an eye already familiar with them. The producer was betrayed by his red fez, which gleamed like a little spark in the sunshine, and the manager by those delicate movements of his hands which seemed to say: Well, damn it all, there are two sides to everything! ”  Page 187
