In Real Life:
Now – I don’t want to give it all away but let’s just say Lian Dolan chose the Langham as the setting for a few interesting plot twists in Helen of Pasadena. So – of course I wanted to see where all those things happened and I found the resort makes you feel you’re living right inside the pages of the book. It’s not only located right in the neighborhood where Helen supposedly lived as Mrs. Fairchild – but the Langham is a social hub of sorts in Pasadena – so you can feel all that as well. In fact – the hotel is steeped in history – for a California hotel. It came into being in 1907 when a Civil War Veteran – General Wentworth – built it. It only lasted one season – but the General did get a street named after him – I noticed that when I cruised through the Oak Grove neighborhood – so that’s good. Anyway – Henry Huntington, the railroad tycoon, purchased the hotel and reopened it in 1914. Through the years it’s been a Sheraton Hotel, a Ritz Carlton and now it’s owned by – as you might have guessed – Langham Hotels.
